Yahoo Publisher Network (YPN)
Yahoo Publisher Network offers a similar contextual ad program to AdSense, but aimed more specifically at a US audience with ads which although not quite as accurately targeted sometimes offers higher CPC rates and therefore eCPMs.
Yahoo Publisher Network is currently only available to US publishers, and focuses on US visitors which does mean that publishers tend to have to geotarget their ads. However, when implemented properly with such targeting the eCPMs that YPN generates for some sites is higher than that produced by Google AdSense. Their support is also quite fast and polite, often going into a good amount of detail to help publisher's solve their problems.
YPN is Yahoo's competitor to AdSense, and so is often slightly behind them with implementing new features. However, unlike with AdSense, you are able to add keywords to your sites' profiles to help them find target ads. This helps with pages like poll results, with which contextually targeted ads show technical or survey ads whatever the genre of the site, but with site keywords the ads are targeted to the genre at worst. YPN also offers a way for publishers to monetise their RSS feeds which is great for blogs and other regularly updated news sites. Nonetheless, the contextually targeted ads aren't as relevant as those from AdSense, producing lower CTRs, but do offer higher CPCs, resulting in roughly similar eCPMs.
The interface is clean and simple to use and slightly prettier than that of AdSense, with both networks offering a similarly wide range of ad sizes and payment options. Overall, YPN is a great alternative to AdSense for some publishers, especially those with a primarily US userbase, with either option being good for contextually targeted ads.
